8 Beneficial Yoga Asanas for Kidney Stones

Having kidney stones is a painful condition to live with. It can happen to anyone at any age.  Men are at a higher risk of developing kidney stones than women.  If you are prone to developing kidney stones then you have to take proper care to prevent it in future. Yoga helps in stretching the body and stimulates the vital organs including your kidneys.

It helps in relieving symptoms of kidney stones like cramps, restlessness, nausea and helps enhance kidney function. It also helps in disposing off very minute to moderate sized kidney stones with regular practice. However, effect of yoga varies from person to person depending upon their specific body constitution, symptoms and diet.

Here is a list of 8 beneficial yoga asanas that help prevent kidney stones and relieve its symptoms-

  1. Ushtra asana (Camel pose)

Camel pose helps in preventing kidney stones. If you already have kidney stone, this asana helps relieve the symptoms of kidney stone.

Steps to do it:

  1. Stand on your knees on the floor mat.
  2. Keep your hands next to your body on the side.
  3. Slowly bend your body backward as much your body comfortably allows.
  4. Now hold your heels with your hands.
  5. Hold this posture for 10 seconds and breathe normally.
  6. Release the posture very gradually and return to the starting position.
  7. Repeat ushtra asana once.

  1. Uttanpadasana (Raised leg pose)

Uttanpada asana strengthens the muscles of your lower back, abdomen, pelvic area and legs. It helps abdominal muscles to contract which improves the function of your kidneys, liver and pancreas. It also relieves lower back pain.

Steps to do it:

  1. Lie down on your back on a floor mat.
  2. Keep your arms beside the body with palms resting on the floor.
  3. Exhale and while breathing in slowly lift both legs up till they are perpendicular to the floor.
  4. Make sure your legs are straight and your toes are pointing up.
  5. Take normal breaths in this position for 15-20 seconds.
  6. While exhaling slowly bring your legs down and relax.
  7. Repeat this asana once more.

Uttanpadasana

  1. Pawanmukt asana (Wind releasing pose)

Pawanmukt asana helps relieve gastric problem, constipation and kidney stone.

Steps to do it:

  1. Lie down on your back on a floor mat.
  2. Inhaling bring up both the knees to your chest and hold them with both hands.
  3. Bring up your head and try to touch your nose to your knees (bend as much as your body allows).
  4. Take a few long and deep breaths in this pose.
  5. You may also rock your body up and down as well as from right to left to massage your back.
  6. Exhale and slowly release the pose.
  7. Repeat this asana thrice.

Pawanmukt asana

  1. Bala asana (Child’s pose)

Bala asana helps prevent the formation of kidney stones and also relieves its symptoms. Additionally, this asana improves your digestion and relieves stomach cramps.

Steps to do it:

  1. Sit in vajrasana (with your buttocks resting on your heels) on a floor mat.
  2. While breathing in bring your arms straight up above your head.
  3. While breathing out slowly bend forward till your forehead touches the floor.
  4. Make sure your arms are outstretched with palms facing the floor.
  5. Continue breathing in this posture for 15-20 seconds.
  6. While inhaling slowly bring your body up and relax the pose.
  7. Repeat this asana once more.

  1. Bhujang asana (Cobra pose)

Bhujang asana improves blood circulation in the body and stimulates the organs in the abdominal region. It helps relieve symptoms of kidney stones and enhances kidney function.

Steps to do it:

  1. Lie down on your tummy on the floor mat with legs together.
  2. Place your hands palms on the floor beside your shoulders.
  3. Inhale and simultaneously lift your upper body (head, shoulders, and abdomen) till the navel.
  4. Feel the stretch on your back, relax your shoulders and look up.
  5. Continue taking long deep breaths for 15-20 seconds.
  6. While exhaling slowly come back to the resting position and relax.
  7. Repeat the same steps once.

Bhujang Asana 2

  1. Dhanur asana (Bow pose)

Dhanur asana is beneficial in relieving symptoms of kidney stones and improving kidney function.

Steps to do it:

  1. Lie down on your tummy on a floor mat.
  2. Keep your arms beside your body on either sides and keep your legs two feet apart.
  3. Breathe in deeply and as you breathe out, fold your knees and hold the ankles with your hands.
  4. While inhaling pull your chest off the ground and pull your legs up straight on the tips of your feet.
  5. Look straight ahead, stretch the body like a bow and hold the posture with only your tummy touching the ground.
  6. Continue to take deep breaths for 15-20 seconds in this pose.
  7. Exhaling, slowly release the pose and come back to resting position.

Dhanur Asana

  1. Garuda asana (Eagle pose)

Garuda asana increases flow of blood to the kidneys, boosts kidney function and relieves the symptoms of kidney stone. It improves your body balance and strengthens the muscles of lower body.

Steps to do it:

  1. Stand straight on a flat surface.
  2. Lift your right leg and cross it over your left thigh.
  3. Balance your body on the left leg.
  4. Raise both the elbows at shoulder level.
  5. Cross your left elbow over your right elbow and bring your palms closer.
  6. Breathe normally and maintain this posture for 15-20 seconds.
  7. Gently release the pose and relax.
  8. Repeat the same steps with opposite legs and arms.
  9. In the end lie down and relax in the corpse pose.

Garuda asana

  1. Ardha matsyendra asana (Half spinal twist)

Ardha matsyendra asana improves the functioning of your kidneys, liver, stomach and pancreas. It is recommended for conditions like urinary disorders, obesity etc. which are common causes of kidney stones.

Steps to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably on a floor mat with legs stretched out together in front.
  2. Bend the left knee and place your left heel under your right hip.
  3. Put your right leg over the left knee.
  4. Put your left hand over the right knee.
  5. Place your right hand behind your back (or on the floor behind your back).
  6. Now twist your waist to the right side in this pose and look over your right shoulder.
  7. Keep your back straight and breathe deeply for 15-20 seconds with eyes closed.
  8. Exhale and release the pose- relax right hand first, then your waist, chest and head in this order.
  9. Repeat these steps on the other side and relax in the end.

Ardha matsyendra asana

It is best to learn and practice these Yogasanas under a trainer to do them effectively and to avoid any kind of strain or injury. Asanas give your maximum benefit when done on a light stomach on a regular basis. Make sure to warm up before you start doing yoga and to cool off after the practice with pranayama. Consult your doctor to include yoga regimen in your kidney stone management plan.
