Ayurveda: Kapha-Pitta Dual Dosha Balance

In Ayurveda there is an important concept called Prakriti. Prakriti is the physical and mental constitution of an individual which is determined at the time of conception by the dominance of doshas (Vata, pitta and kapha).

Prakriti is the one which determines your stature, hair, complexion, eyes, etc. There are different types of prakriti based on the combination of the doshas like vata-pitta, pitta-kapha, vata- kapha or single dosha like vata, pitta or kapha prakriti.

Prakriti is essential in choosing treatment, lifestyle changes in daily regimens (dinacharya) or seasonal regimens (ritucharya).

Pitta-kapha prakriti is one among the dual combination prakriti. It is easy to manage dual dosha Prakriti in general. Being pitta-kapha prakriti person you can follow pitta-pacifying regimen during the late spring and summer seasons especially when the weather is hot. Follow a kapha-pacifying regimen during the cooler times of year like fall, winter, early spring and especially when the weather is cool and damp.

Pitta is inherently hot. Hot weather, foods, seasons, noon time and even emotions like excessive anger, revengeful character, etc., can increase Pitta.

Pungent, sour and salty taste increase Pitta. Chili pepper, capsicum, pickles, deep fried and fermented foods will vitiate pitta.

Sweet, bitter and astringent tastes will decrease Pitta by providing the opposite qualities to those of Pitta. Ghee, milk, wheat, rice, sweets will pacify pitta.

Kapha accumulates in the body during cold climate, liquefies during hot season causing various diseases.

Sweet, sour and salty taste increase Kapha. Milk and its products, stale foods, refrigerated or frozen foods, more fruits will vitiate kapha.

Sleeping during daytime and sedentary lifestyle also vitiates kapha.

Pungent, bitter and astringent taste, freshly cooked, whole foods that are light, dry, well spiced and relatively easy to digest, ideally served warm or hot will balance kapha by balancing mucous production, regulating moisture levels, maintaining adequate heat, and supports proper digestion.

Ayurveda emphasises on balancing the three doshas through a proper diet and lifestyle. All things that aggravate the doshas should be avoided.
