Periods are a necessary evil for most women. While you might hate that time of the month because of cramps, pain & bleeding, you must know that it is necessary for your reproductive health. If your periods become irregular it may be an indication of something more severe. The concern is valid considering the fact that irregular periods can be a preliminary sign of diseases like PCOS, endometriosis & even uterine cancer.
You can regulate your irregular periods with the help of effective Ayurvedic remedies, medication & a good diet. But this isn’t enough. To stay fit, you need to exercise too. And the best form of exercise for irregular periods is Yoga. Yoga has proven to be very helpful in regulating periods. Ustrasana regulates periods by opening up the pectoral muscles of the body. This facilitates better blood flow during periods. It also makes the spine as well as the hips more flexible. It can help regulate your periods & relieve the discomfort that accompanies it. It also alleviates the lower back pain that many people experience due to periods.
Step 1: Stand on your knees facing upwards and keep your thighs straight. Make sure your feet & knees touch each other.
Step 2: Keep your legs close together and slowly try to lean backwards.
Step 3: Push your hips forward while bending your spine as backward as possible. Do not strain your muscles. Make sure your thighs are vertical
Step 4: Keep your hands on your hips while leaning back. Maintain this position for 1-2 minutes. Support the body weight equally on both arms and legs.
Step 5: Try to touch your feet with your hands while leaning back.
Step 6: While inhaling, try to stay in this position for around 30 seconds or as far as you find comfortable.
Step 7: While exhaling, release from the position, relax & come back to the original kneeling position.
This yogasana strengthens the back & abdominal muscles, thus regulating periods. It also stimulates the reproductive organs. This relieves menstrual discomfort. It is very helpful in losing weight & reducing fat, especially around the abdominal region. This is important because excess weight is another contributory factor to irregular periods.
Step 1: Lie on your stomach, Keep your feet hip-width apart. Rest your arms beside your body.
Step 2: Gently fold your knees and raise your heels in the air. Lift your arms towards your hips and try to hold your ankles with your hands.
Step 3: Take a long deep breath. Slowly lift your chest, thighs and legs off the ground. Arch your body as much as you can.
Step 4: Try to touch your feet with your hands while leaning back.
Step 5: Pull your legs while looking straight.
Step 6: Hold this position. Concentrate on your breathing. Take long & deep breaths while keeping your body as taut as a bow.
Step 7: After 15-20 seconds, relax your body while exhaling slowly and return to the initial position.
Malasana majorly strains the abdominal & pelvic muscles, stretching them. It also stretches the sacrum, groin & hips which helps provide ample blood to the reproductive organs thus eradicating the problem of irregular periods. It also enhances the body’s metabolism and improves posture & flexibility.
Step 1: Keep your legs together and stand upright. Bend your knees gently to sit in a squatting position.
Step 2: Breathe slowly while squatting. Spread your thighs as wide as possible. You can keep them at a little farther distance than your torso width.
Step 3: Exhale & lean forward. Bring your torso between your thighs.
Step 4:Put both of your palms together in front of your chest. Press your elbows against your inner thighs.
Step 5: Hold this position for a few seconds & then release.
Vajrasana is very helpful in strengthening the pelvic muscles & the reproductive organs. It enhances blood flow to the reproductive organs, thus regulating irregular periods. It also reduces the back pain caused due to periods.
Step 1: Stand on your knees. Make sure your feet are close together & the base of your feet is facing upwards.
Step 2: Slowly bend your knees and sit back on your feet. Make sure that your buttocks rest on your feet.
Step 3: Sit in this position and try to concentrate on your breathing.
Step 4: Stay in this position for a few minutes while concentrating deeply. After 10-15 minutes relax your muscles and resume the initial position.
A major reason for irregular periods is often stress. Pranayama consists of breathing exercises that help release stress from the body. It is also known to enhance blood flow throughout the body & stimulate the functioning of the reproductive organs. It boosts the immune system too.
Pranayama consists of multiple breathing exercises like Bhramari, Bhastrika, Kapalbhati, etc. The best way to learn these techniques is by joining a yoga & meditation class. You can also look them up on the internet & practice at home.
This yoga pose cures menstrual problems by improving the blood circulation to reproductive organs. It stretches the muscles in the groin & hip region, making them more flexible. It also relieves stress, while stimulating the functioning of the reproductive organs. The cumulative effect of all these is regulated periods.
Step 1: Sit on the ground with your legs stretched forward in front of you.
Step 2: Breathe in deeply & while exhaling bend your knees. Bring your legs towards your body.
Step 3: Touch the base of your feet with each other and hold the soles of your feet with your hands. Make sure your feet are as close to the pelvis as possible.
Step 4: Try to bring your knees closer to the ground, while staying in the above posture.
Step 5: Hold yourself in this position for 5 minutes and concentrate on breathing.
Step 6: While exhaling, relax your legs and return to the original position.
Yoga asanas can treat irregular menstrual cycles to some extent but cannot completely cure them. The only way to cure irregular periods is to take medication.
