Home Remedies and Ayurvedic Treatment for Knee Pain

Different kinds of pain can be experienced by a person throughout his lifetime. They may hamper his/her physical activities or reduce bodily strength. Knee pain is the most common joint problem seen in most people. When it is caused by strain or physical exertion and injuries like ligament/cartilage tear it may be temporary. However, when it is lead by medical conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis or infection, knee pain becomes a chronic illness.

Signs of Chronic Knee Pain

A person’s physical movements heavily depend on his/her limb joints. Therefore, knee pain can not only produce discomfort but also limit a person’s flexibility. In extreme conditions, it may lead to inflammation and weakness in the leg muscles as
well.

  • Ache
The patient may experience varying intensities of pain and tenderness  depending upon the kind of damage in the knee. There may be mild or severe pricking pain.

  • Visible Marks
The suffering knee joint may swell up and become reddish in colour if its internal injury is not treated in time.

  • Joint Constriction
After high physical exertion, the knee joint may also get stiff. This in turn would prevent further movements like bending, stretching, etc.

  • Difficulty in Standing or Walking
When the knees are weakened by damage or pain, the body becomes incapable to carry its own body weight. Thus, the patient experiences high pain while standing or walking.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain
The Indian kitchen houses a variety of spices and herbs which can reduce knee pain. By taking these eatables in appropriate proportions, patients can make the knees stronger and more flexible.

  • Fenugreek Paste

Once the oil has cooled to a comfortably warm temperature, massage it into the skin around affected area. Leave it on for about three hours before washing it off. Do this twice daily until you see improvement.

Increased blood circulation in the joints through light exercises and yoga may also help considerably. Unlike other medical issues, knee pain management requires more healthy habits than precautions.

  • Increase Vitamin D Foods
For adults, the recommended daily value of vitamin D is 15 micrograms. So, increasing intake of natural vitamin D can be very beneficial. Salmon, sardines, shrimp, egg yolk, fortified milk and yogurt, cereals, orange juice are good sources of Vitamin D.

  • High Supplementary Nutrient Diet
Eating foods rich in magnesium, boron, zinc, Vitamin A and C may help the body to absorb vitamin D more efficiently. Thus, knee pain patients must include almonds, apples, basil, spinach, fortified breakfast cereal, baked beans and carrots in their regular diet.

  • Enjoy Meals with Ghee
Ghee and oils in moderate amounts are necessary in daily diet, as they keep the normal joints properly lubricated and also provide lubrication to the dried- up joints.

  • Improve joint mobility and flexibility
Simple activities like walking, and easy exercise help to improve joint strength. Slow, gentle stretching can improve flexibility, reduce stiffness and offer relief from pain. Yoga is extremely good for managing stiffness.

  • Control Weight
Excess weight adds additional stress to weight-bearing joints. Losing weight can help people with knee pain to reduce pain and limit further joint damage.
