Learn How to Manage Mumps Naturally with Ayurveda!
Mumps is a viral infection of your salivary glands (parotid glands) located at the base of your ears and side of your cheeks. Mumps is also known as Parotitis. It is a contagious disease, which can spread from one person to the other quickly when they sneeze or cough. It is preventable by MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) Vaccination.

Symptoms of Mumps

You will observe the below symptoms only after 2-3 weeks of exposure.
  • Fever.
  • Puffiness of your cheeks.
  • Pain and tenderness over the salivary glands.
  • Difficulty in chewing and deglutition (swallowing).
  • Decreased appetite.
  • Tiredness.
  • Infection may spread to your brain, testicles in male and ovaries in female.
  • It may also cause permanent deafness.

Management of Mumps

  • Drink pomegranate juice, soup and gruel made up of rice.
  • Take complete bed rest.
  • Avoid going to public places and keep away from other family members to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Keep measuring the body temperature. If it reaches 103 degree F or more, visit your doctor immediately.
  • Prevent dehydration by taking sufficient quantity of fluids.
  • Avoid taking solid foods.
  • Avoid too spicy or sour foods which activates your salivary glands.
  • Avoid curds, refrigerated/ frozen and fermented foods.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Mumps

  • Boil required quantity of water with Shadangadi churna or musta and keep drinking 2-3 sips every hour instead of normal water.
  • Guluchyadi Kashayam, Dashamoola churna and Maha sudarshan churna will help to reduce your fever.
  • To reduce pain and inflammation Triphala guggulu, Amrutadi guggulu and Punarnava guggulu are beneficial.
  • Apply Shothagna lepa to reduce swelling and ease pain.
  • Drink Ginger tea instead of normal coffee/tea.
