Common cold infection is caused by Rhinovirus.
It is an air-borne disease and can travel from one infected person to a healthy person.
At times, even bacterial agents can cause cold attacks but chances are very slim.
If one is a heavy smoker, has compromised immunity or is older in age, risk of contracting it increases.

Painkillers and Antibiotics: Any persistent signs of common cold like throat pain, congestion or body aches calls for painkillers and antibiotics. Bacterial infection in the chest is prevented by antibiotics.
Decongestants: Mucus formed in the nasal passage is expelled with the help of sprays, pills or syrups. Common colds may happen due to allergy as well. In this case, decongestants having antihistamines, which is an anti-inflammatory hormone, is used to soothe the respiratory tract lining.
