  • Morphology: adscendens is a perennial, many-ranched and thorny shrub. Trunk is long, round and white in colour. Branches are dusky and angular. Flowers are long and white. Fruit is beery and contain one seed.
  • Chemical composition: Asparagin, starch, albumin, spirostanol glycosides – asparain a and b, and furostanol glycosides – asparagside a and b.
  • Rasa (Taste): Madhura (Sweet).

  • Vipaka (Post digestion effect): Madhura (Sweet).

Kumari

  • Family: Liliaceae.
  • Botanical name: Aloe vera Touen, ex L. Syn. barbadensis Mill.
  • Synonyms: Gvarpatha (Hindi), Atipicchila, Ghritakumari, Grhakanya, Katikini, Kumari, Mandala, Mata, Rasayani, Savara, Vandobhava (Sanskrit), Indian Aloe (English).
  • Habitat: vera is found in North Africa, America, Spain and India.
  • Morphology: vera is herb. Levees are greenish-yellow, thick and fleshy, tapering at the base. The leaves contain juice referred to as aloe.
  • Chemical composition: Glucoside (aloin) and acetylated mannan (acemannan).
  • Rasa (Taste): Katu (Pungent).

Gokshura

  • Gana or Classification according to Ayurveda: Mutravirechneya (Diuretic), Krimighana (Anthelmintic), Virtarvadi, Laghu panchmoola and Kantka panchmoola.
  • Family: Zygophyllaceae.
  • Botanical name: Tribulus terrestris
  • Synonyms: Gokharu (Hindi), Bhaksyatka, Chandruma, Gokantaka, Gokshura, Svadukantaka, Trikantaka, Ksuraka and Trika (Sanskrit) and Puncture-vine (English).
  • Habitat: terrestris is found in India.
  • Morphology: terrestris is an herbaceous plant having small leaves and yellow coloured flowers. Fruit of T. terrestris is of faint yellow colour having cover of thorns.
  • Chemical composition: Alkaloid (harmine and harmaline), steroid saponin (protodioscin) and resin.
  • Rasa (Taste): Madhura (Sweet).

  • Morphology: orchoides is a small, delicate and perennial herb. Leaves are lanceolate. Flowers are hairy and bright-yellow in colour. Fruit is capsule. Seeds are fissured and black in colour.
  • Chemical composition: Starch, sterols, tannins and ash and oil.
  • Rasa (Taste): Madhura (Sweet) and Tikta (Bitter).
  • Guna (Physical property): Guru (Heavy) and Snigdha.
  • Virya (Potency): Ushna (Hot).
  • Vipaka (Post digestion effect): Madhura (Sweet).
  • Karma (Action): Shuktajanana (Spermopiotic).

Jatiphala

  • Gana or Classification according to Ayurveda: Dipneya, Kasahara, Piplayadi, Shoolaprashamana, Trikatu and Triptighana.

  • Botanical name: Myristica fragrans
  • Synonyms: Jaiphala (Hindi), Elvalu, Harivaluka, Jatikosha, Jatiphala, Valuka (Sanskrit), Nutmeg tree (English).
  • Habitat: fragrans is found in Mauritius.
  • Morphology: fragrans is a fragrant tree having soft branches. Leaves are light brown with lower part having red veins. Flowers are small yellow and fragrant. Fruit is oval or round and contains brown coloured hard seed.
  • Chemical composition: Volatile oil (containing phenylpropanoids including myristicin, saffrole and elemicin) and fixed oil (butter of nutmeg). Recently a lignan (dehydro-diisoeugenol) has been reported.
  • Rasa (Taste): Katu (Pungent) and Tikta (Bitter).
  • Guna (Physical property): Laghu (Light) and Tikshana.
  • Virya (Potency): Ushna (Hot).
  • Vipaka (Post digestion effect): Katu (Pungent).

  • Therapeutics: fragrans is used in the treatment of indigestion, diarrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, spermatorhoea and migraine.

Kapikacchu

  • Habitat: M prurita is found in India and Sri Lanka.
  • Morphology: prurita is a twinner having pods covered with brown hairs. Hairs are rich in mucunain, which causes release of histamine resulting in severe itching.
  • Chemical composition: L-dopa, alkaloids – nicotine, mucunadinine, mucuadine, pruridinine, pruridine and, glutathione, serotonin and glucoside.
