You can’t disagree with me if I say greying hair is a universally known sign of aging. You may simply protest that you are in your 30’s still, or more unfortunately, in your 20’s and still your scalp has increasingly visible grey hair.
You may be a naturalist, one who believes in the powerful laws of nature or, simply a stoic who sees even grey hair as fate. You don’t like to hide those silvers and prefer to go ahead saying “I am just aging gracefully.” Well, I bet your family will not be happy with this.
Causes for Grey Hair
Premature Greying of hair is mostly hereditary. If your mother or sister had it, you would perhaps have it too. Yet, don’t ignore food habits and lifestyle factors like anxiety and stress as reasons for greying hair. In men, premature greying can start by the age of 30 and by 35 it can all turn grey.
* Heredity
* Stress related problems
* Chlorine water
* Nutrition deficiencies
* Diseases like Thyroidism, vitiligo etc.
* Excessive use of hair dryers, rollers etc.
The top vitamins and minerals associated with hair health are Vitamin B, iodine, copper and iron. An upset balance in these can aggravate silver hair.
I should set a disclaimer before I mention the remedies of grey hair that these cannot help reverse grey hair and may not be effective if your grey hair is hereditary. Yet, by all means, you should practise them regularly as they will improve the quality of hair and the health of the scalp.
Home Remedies
• Applying the paste of hibiscus flowers or using coconut oil prepared with its paste is beneficial.
• Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of almond oil. Massage this to scalp and hair.
• Add sun dried Indian Gooseberry[amla] to coconut oil and boil. This oil is also a wonderful remedy for hair fall, to improve the thickness of hair and for silky smooth tresses. A fresh paste of amla can be applied on scalp and hair. Rice gruel can be added to make the paste. Wash off after 15 minutes without shampoo.
• Massage hair with cow milk butter.
• Eat a few curry leaves every day. Boil some curry leaves in coconut oil, strain the oil when cold and apply on hair and scalp one hour before bath.
• Soak 1-2 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds [methi dana] in water overnight, grind and apply in the morning. Wash off after 20 minutes.
• A natural hair dye with hair enhancing properties is henna [lawsonia inermis]. Make a smooth paste out of 2 tablespoons of henna powder, 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seed powder, 1 teaspoon of yogurt and juice from half a lemon. Use warm water to mix the ingriedients. Leave to set overnight. Apply it well from hair ends to roots. It can turn white hair in to reddish brown. You may add beet root juice for more colour.
*Oil your hair (never the scalp) to prevent henna from drying the hair.
Hope one of these herbal home remedies will help you to reduce and delay premature grey hair.
