Indian sorrel, known as ‘Changeri’ in Sanskrit, belongs to the family Geraniaceae and its botanical name is Oxalis Corniculata. Indian sorrel is a small hairy annual herb which has numerous branches that shoot out from the roots and creep to a length of 12-30 cms. The stem is very thin, delicate, and hairy with pale green compound leaves. The flowers are small and yellow coloured with high content of oxalic acid and potassium oxalate. This herb grows wild during monsoon and on wet grounds.

Home Remedies Using Indian Sorrel

1. Weigh 10gms of the leaves and stem together add to buttermilk and boil, drink this twice daily to find relief from bleeding piles and menorrhagia.
2. Warts: To remove warts, tender coconut water mixed with the juice of Indian sorrel leaves should be applied on it regularly.
3. Fever: An infusion of the leaves can bring temperature down.
4. Stomach disorders: leaves can be eaten as an appetizer; it stimulates the stomach and aids its action.
5. Dysentery: fresh juice of the leaves mixed with honey or sugar is useful in dysentery.
6. Jaundice: A tbsp. of fresh juice mixed with butter milk can be taken once daily in the treatment of this disease.
7. Excessive thirst: Excessive thirst due to diabetes or severe heat can be cured by drinking butter milk mixed with fresh juice of Indian sorrel.
8. Inflammation: A poultice of the leaves applied over an inflammation relieves pain and when applied over boils ripens them.
9. Red spots and eruptions: The juice mixed with black pepper and ghee gives relief.
10. Eye disorders: Herb is very useful in the prevention and treatment of eye disorders. A few drops of the leaf juice put into the eyes everyday keeps the eyes from strain and opacity of the cornea and cataract.
11. Insomnia: scalp should be massaged at bed time with medicated oil prepared by mixing its leaf juice and castor oil.
