Bed wetting is also termed as nocturnal enuresis or nighttime incontinence. It is the condition where there is involuntary urination during sleep. By the age of 5-7 years, children will get bladder control if the child is wetting the bed even after 7 years you need to consult your physician.

Causes of Bed-Wetting 

  • Hereditary.
  • Children suffering from ADHD.
  • Worm infestation.
  • Chronic constipation.
  • Stress, fear and emotional disturbance.
  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Small bladder and some neurological defects.
  • Sleep apnoea.

Symptoms of Bed-Wetting

  • You may notice painful urination in your child if there is urinary tract infection.
  • Associated with hard stools.
  • Your child with usually good bladder control suddenly starts wetting the bed.
  • Snoring during sleep.

Management of Bed-Wetting

  • If your child is suffering from constipation, you need to treat it with Triphala or Avipattikar churna and make few changes in diet.
  • If you suspect worms in your child, deworm with Krimighna vati or vidangasava.
  • Avoid giving more fluids after evening. Instead, give sufficient water during day time.
  • Avoid giving beverages containing caffeine/ coffee / tea.
  • Cultivate early dinner habit and avoid late night dinner.
  • Instruct your child to urinate every 2 hours during day time and avoid urgency.
  • Encourage your child to visit the toilet twice before going to bed.
  • Don’t try to punish or tease or embarrass the child, it will worsen the condition.
  • Counsel and talk well with the child to reduce stress and emotional disturbance.
  • Try using moisture alarm or manual alarm technique. Observe your child for few days at night time and note the usual time of bedwetting. Set the alarm 10-15 minutes of the noted time. When the alarm rings, wake your child to visit the toilet and to come back to sleep again.
  • Keep the bed lamp on at night times in your children room. So the child can make his way to the toilet without fear.
  • Appreciate and praise the child when he doesn’t wet the bed.
  • Few medicines like Neo, Manasamitra vati, Chandraprabha vati, Vastyamayantaka ghrita, Shilajit and Kalyanaka ghrita are very effective.
  • Decoction prepared out of Yashtimadhu, Brahmi, Ashwagandha and Jatamansi are beneficial.
  • Make sure to include tindora, cinnamon, amla, turmeric and mustard in the child’s diet regularly.
  • Give regular oil massage with Dhanvantara taila to your child’s lower abdomen.
  • Bladder, pelvic muscle strengthening exercises and certain asanas like Baddha Konasana, Pavanamuktasana, Baddha padmasana, Paschimottanasana, Chakrasana, Ardha matsyendrasana are beneficial.
