I don’t know a thing about you, but I am sure you too go through predicaments and get stressed out at times.  Some of us are worse than you when we get affected by Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The answer to who gets IBS is vague and there is a lack of scientific understanding behind how IBS is linked with stress. Yet, IBS and mental stress share a hand in glove relationship.

Some people feel nauseated when they go through mental agony. An accidental scene, the death of a loved one or heavy workload increases the colon sensitivity of IBS sufferers. Stress and anxiety of the moment increases abdominal cramps, acidity, loss of appetite, bowel movements, passing of loose stools and adds on to the discomfort. What makes doctors and their patients uneasy and uncertain is the lack of a unique cure for IBS. Whatever treatment available for IBS is symptomatic.

I talked to my GP about stress once during my Post Graduation exam days. I told her that my head buzzes with a terrible headache, my hands feel a kind of zing and I feel like puking every other minute. My doctor smiled and gave me her diagnosis: “Those are the symptoms of your Linguistics exam. You are so stressed that you have a headache and you feel nauseated. The rest is all contrived by your brain. You are totally healthy and need no medicines. Write your exam well.”


  • Stress is the worsening factor of IBS symptoms too. The emotional roller coaster in you takes its toll on your digestive system. Nausea is the result of the over-secretion of the stomach acids and hormones caused by Stress. Nausea causes a lot of other problems like weight loss and plays havoc in your day to day life. It is important to take control of your emotions so that they do not ruin you.  Take your time off your worries and learn a good Stress relieving technique. Learn how to cool yourself down during a stressful situation or talk it out to your loved one regardless of his or own reactions (surprise or irritation). A psychologist friend of mine advised that stress therapy works better than counseling as some counselors can be misleading.
  • Try home remedies like ginger in hot water or peppermint tea to settle your stomach. It may worsen the situation for those who are not used to it.
  • Eat it healthy. You can’t eat anything solid or nutritious when you have nausea. Liquid or semi-solid food should work just right along with some drugs. Intake of nutrients is by all means important to fight fatigue and weight loss.
  • Motion sickness or nausea reduction pills offer only temporary relief. If your antibiotic, taken for some illness, is bothering you talk to your doctor about it. Get medical help without hesitation.
