Marigold is an Egyptian plant which was first used unknowingly used for giving color to foods. It gained popularity as a medicinal herb much later owing to the presence carotenes, flavonoids, resin, saponin, sterols, triterpenes, bitter glycosides and volatile oils. Once its properties were discovered, the flower began to be used in cooking, skin care, for wound healing and more. Marigold is an alterative, analgesic, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, aperient, astringent, bactericide, carminative, cholagogue, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, stomachic, styptic and tonic.   • Marigold, otherwise known as Calendula, Gold Bloom, Maraville, Mercadela or Qaraqus is an excellent remedy to skin problems like acne, eczema and dry phthiriasis (eyelid infestation).

  • With its anti-fungal properties, it is a good treatment fungal, viral and bacterial conditions including candida, athlete’s foot and ringworm.

  • Thanks to its anti-septic actions, it can soothe sun burn, wounds, cuts, bruises, stings, warts and diaper rash. Marigold will provide a quick aid to wound healing by increasing blood flow to the affected area.

However,internal administration of Marigold is not recommended for pregnant women.

Using Marigold is easy.To ingest, make a tea of fresh or dried Marigold flower heads and for external application make an ointment by heating coconut oil with chopped marigold flowers. Marigold flowers can be dried and stored for up to one year. Marigold essential oil is also available in the market.

By just planting Marigold in your yard, you can be free from insects and other seasonal bugs. Many of the insect repellants we know contain “pyrethum”, a natural extract of Marigold.
