OMG Facts About Omega 3!

You might not even read this post thinking there have been previous posts about Omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils and flax seeds.  But did you know that Omega 3s can even prevent colon cancer? And that lack of Omega 3 can cause itchy skin? I bet you did not. Omega 3s are not alien to us anymore. We have an idea what Omega 3s are, where we can get them from and why we should get them for. But do we fully know what Omega 3s can do for us?

  •   We generally hate the word ‘fat’. ‘Fat’ is something we try to run away from. Omega 3 is a kind of fatty acid too but they are “fats of life”. But we need not escape from it as it is a good unsaturated fat that helps our cells to function properly. It produces cell membranes with high fluidity to allow the nutrients to enter the cell and strain it of the waste materials quickly. Saturated fats, on the other hand, harden the cell membranes depriving them of their fluidity. Lack of Omega 3 may eventually show up as dry, itchy skin, fatigue, brittle nails, dry hair, eczema, psoriasis and more.
  • Doesn’t walking with dimples annoy you? Cellulites are the worst enemies when it comes to women. There is hardly any point in applying anti cellulite creams without changing your diet. Detoxify your system, encourage good blood circulation and ensure good nutrition to get rid of cellulites. Essential fats like Omega 3s would help you get rid of the unnecessary fats and retain the elasticity of the cells.
  • Arachidonic acid levels (omega 6) pertaining to the dietary habits is the reason behind skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. In extreme cases , they are precursors to cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Hence it is important to maintain the Omega 6-Omega 3 (3:1) ratio to lead a healthy lifestyle.
  • Prevent atherosclerosis with Omega 3. Obesity is often the culprit behind fat build up and hardening of the arteries. This plaque build up on the blood vessels to the brain can cause a stroke and on the vessels of the legs can lead to PAD or Peripheral Vascular Disease. A healthy lifestyle with an adequate supply of omega 3 can save your life!
  • Type 2 diabetes has become a part of life to many of us. High triglyceride levels indicate the onset of diabetes and also the risk of coronary heart disease. The good fats in Omega 3 can lower your triglyceride levels.
  • Ward off the risk of alzheimer’s and dementia with 2-3 grams of Omega 3 everyday. We have already discussed about Omega 3s working on plaque in the arteries. They also prevent the brain cells from dying lowering the risk of brain function loss.
  • Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention testifies that those who had an Omega 6-3 imbalance are at a greater risk of having colon cancer. It is found that people who ate a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids had a reduced rate of colon cancer. In people with colon cancer, Omega  3 can slower the rate of progression of the disease. Another reason to start concentrating on Omega 3s.
  • Who doesn’t like thick, lustrous hair? If you have dry, damaged hair stop gaping at those shampoo ads and start having Omega 3s. Omega 3s may not grow new hair but they necessarily supply good nutrition to your hair (through ALA (alpha linolic acid), EPA (ecoisapentaionc acid) and DHA (docosahexaenioc acid) to check hair loss and to impart that natural glow to your hair.

Since you may already know the sources of Omega 3 let me tell you what foods contain Omega 6 so that you can avoid them. Soybean oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil and corn oil contain Omega 6 in high quantities. Avoid fast foods, processed foods, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings to check Omega 6. Hemp oil is found to have the best balance of Omega 6 and 3.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
