    Precautions:

    • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Do not use Ashwagandha if you are pregnant. There is some evidence that suggests that Ashwagandha might cause miscarriages. Not enough is known about the use of Ashwagandha during breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
    • Diabetes: Ashwagandha might lower blood sugar levels. It could interfere with medications used for diabetes and cause blood sugar levels to go down. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar closely and consult your doctor before taking Ashwagandha.
    • High or low blood pressure: Ashwagandha might lower blood pressure. This could cause blood pressure to sink drastically in people with already low blood pressure, or interfere with medications used to treat high blood pressure. Ashwagandha should be used cautiously if you have low blood pressure or take medications for your blood pressure.
    • Stomach ulcers: Ashwagandha can irritate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Don’t use Ashwagandha if you have a stomach ulcer.
    • Surgery: Ashwagandha may slow down the central nervous system. Healthcare providers worry that anaesthesia and other medications during and after surgery might increase this effect. Stop taking Ashwagandha at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
    • Thyroid disorders: Ashwagandha might increase thyroid hormone levels. Ashwagandha should be used cautiously or avoided if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid hormone medications.

    Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) is a herb used in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India. Its root has a horsey smell (in Sanskrit, Ashva means horse and Gandha means smell) and is said to confer the strength and virility of a horse. Various parts of the plant are used, but the most common in supplements is an extract of its roots.
    A number of studies suggest that it has anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects; studies are mostly supportive of a notable effect of Ashwagandha for this purpose, and it seems to reduce cortisol levels. Ashwagandha also reduces insomnia, fatigue, and symptoms of depression. It may lead to small reductions in blood glucose, blood pressure, and LDL-cholesterol, while slightly increasing HDL-cholesterol. Additionally, it may modestly increase testosterone and sperm quality in infertile men.
    It seems to be safe, but it needs more long-term research that's specifically designed to evaluate its safety. It may cause mild drowsiness and sedation for some people.
    The current studies suggest that the effects of Ashwagandha on stress/anxiety continually improve for at least two months after the beginning daily supplements.

It is also used to reduce the side effects of medications used to treat cancer and schizophrenia. Ashwagandha is used to reduce levels of fat and sugar in the blood.
