Main Ingredients of Haritaki Powder

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula): This wonderful remedy has been discovered by Ayurveda and praised by modern medicine for its rejuvenating action. It is a storehouse of some rare minerals like Iron, Manganese and Copper that promote longevity. Haritaki herb can be used in different combinations to treat a wide range of disorders including digestive, immunity, skin and hair related issues.

Different Types of Haritaki

  • Vijaya (Terminalia chebula Var. typica): Ayurveda places great value on this variety owing to its therapeutic effects on the body. Vijaya Haritaki is often found in the Vindhya mountain region. It functions as a full body tonic. It can effectively treat many kinds of disorders.
  • Rohini (Terminalia chebula Var. citrina): The antimicrobial function of Haritaki finds its best evidence in this variety. Rohini is extracted from the plains of the Singh region, where it is found as a round fruit. It is preferably used for wound healing, ulcer treatment and as a disinfectant.
  • Putana (Terminalia chebula Var. tomentella): Closer to Rohini in its function, Pootana is a Himalayan variety that is solely used as a paste for external application. It helps to relieve inflammation and shrinks wound size. But unlike Rohini, it has a small fruit with big seeds.
  • Amrita (Terminalia chebula Var. gangetica): A common name in the households of Champa Bhagalpur regions, this is the perfect herb to promote gut function. It easily blends with other Ayurvedic formulations. Amrita is an essential ingredient for Panchkarma therapies.
  • Abhaya (Terminalia chebula Var. parviflora): Haritaki has a strong reputation as an eye cleanser. And the credit for that goes to its Abhaya variety. It gently flushes out toxins from the eyes and soothes the inflamed tissues. This variety is located in the Champa regions of Chhattisgarh and bears a 5 layered fruit.
  • Jivanti: Also called Jayanti, this variety is extracted from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. It is distinctly marked by its yellow flowers. Its fruits are dried to make a medicinal powder for all kinds of stomach disorders.
  • Chetaki: Coming from the Himachal region, this variety of Haritaki is known for its purification property. Internal consumption of this herb can eliminate toxins from the body. It has two further subtypes, namely Krishna and Sweta which are divided as per their fruit shape.
  • Kalika: A natural appetizer and healing agent, this variety of Haritaki can be used for both internal and external use. It is a rich source of flavonoids and widely used in Southern India.
  • Pathya: A relatively lesser known variety. It has a moderate detoxifying effect. It cleanses the blood and intestinal passage.
  • Jaya: As imperative, this variety helps to boost the immune system functions. It improves the body’s ability to handle physical and mental strain.
  • Haimavati: This name derives from the Vata-pacifying properties of Haritaki. It helps to expel gas from the intestines and purify the respiratory tract of harmful toxins.

Uses of Haritaki in Ayurveda:
