Protect your Liver and Treat Jaundice with Bhumyamalaki

Bhumyamalaki (also spelt as bhoomiamalaki or bhoomyamalaki) is a well-known hepatoprotective herb provided by nature. It is considered as a powerful rejuvenator by Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine. The botanical name of this herb is Phyllanthus niruri belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. Known as Jungli amla or Jaramlaa in Hindi and Keezharnelli in Malayalam, it contains high amounts of Vit-C.

Some Medicinal Uses and Home Remedies

Jaundice:  The fresh juice extracted from the herb has to be taken twice daily, for 3 days, in the dosage of 10 ml.

  • Wash the whole plant well; add 2 cardamoms and 2 peppercorns and boil this in a glass of water till the original volume is reduced to 1/4th.Drink this decoction twice daily (1/4 cup).

Menorrhagia: 3-6 gms of the herb paste has to be consumed twice daily.

Haematuria, burning micturition: 1 tbsp. bhumyamlaki powder with 2 tbsp. durva grass powder has to be mixed and made into a fine paste. Mix with 1 cup buttermilk and take daily morning.

Fever: Boil the whole plant (1 cup of the herb) in water, along with 4 black peppercorns in 2 cups of water. Filter and drink thrice daily.

Dysentery: The herb paste can be taken along with butter milk for beneficial results.

  • The leaves of this plant can be grinded along with leaf buds of pomegranate and can be consumed along with buttermilk.
  • Boil 1 tbsp. leaf buds of bhumyamlaki along with ½ tsp. fenugreek seeds in 1 cup water. Filter and drink this decoction.

Gonorrhoea: Take 1 tbsp. each of the whole plants of Tulsi and Bhumyamalaki and mix it with 1 cup yogurt and take this twice daily. Continue this for a few days to get beneficial results.

Itching sensation: Pluck a handful of leaves and grind them with 1 tsp. salt and apply on the affected areas. The dried leaf powder can also be used as a bath powder in such condition.

Skin diseases: Grind a fistful of the leaves along with 1 tbsp. salt into a fine paste. Use this as a poultice.

Oedema, ulcer: Boil 1 cup rice in 3 cups water, skim off the frothy starch. To this frothy starch add a fistful of roots and leaves of this plant, pinch of salt and bring it to boil. Use this as a poultice.

Dosage: Churna (powder): 3-6 gms.

Studies point out that Bhumiamalaki is helpful in the management of Hepatitis B. This herb is used in Ayurvedic formulations like Chavanaprasha lehyam, Chemparatyadi tailam, Amrutha prasha ghrutham and Madhuyashtyadi tailam.
