The metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These include high blood pressure, impaired levels of HDL cholesterol, altered glucose metabolism or insulin resistance, and large waist circumference (obesity). These risk factors together increase the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

According to a study metabolic syndrome may predispose one to cognitive dysfunction. In older adults there was a decline in cognitive abilities like word processing, memory, sentence formation, and task executions. Since good physical activity keeps our body fit and helps control weight, it plays a major role in keeping metabolic syndrome at bay. Therefore 30 minutes of moderate-intensity regular exercise is recommended for every individual at least 5 days a week.
