A study conducted on 108 adults aged between 55 and 79 out of which 61 attended Hatha Yoga classes found that doing Yoga boosts brain function. The adults those who performed Hatha Yoga after their stretching and toning exercises three times a week scored better on the cognitive tests compared to what they had before the start of yoga classes. It was seen that just after eight weeks of practicing Hatha Yoga the adults’ performance on tasks like information recall, mental flexibility and task-switching were improved. Hatha yoga includes a set of physical exercises or asanas in which one also brings special attention to their breath. This helps to still the fluctuations of the mind. These studies suggest that doing yoga has an immediate calming effect on the sympathetic nervous system and on the body’s response to stress.
