Find Out Why Water is Important to Your Body!

Water is one of the essential components of your body. About 60 percent of your body weight is contributed by water alone. Each and every system of your body is dependent on water.

Functions of Water in Your Body

  • Carries oxygen, minerals and other nutrients to the cells.
  • Eliminates toxins.
  • Regulates body temperature.
  • Moistens your tissues like mouth, nose, eyes and joints.
  • Prevents constipation.
  • Assists digestion.
  • Aids chemical and metabolic activities.

It is estimated that an average adult may require 2.5 – 3 liters water per day in a temperate climate. Your need increases during intense exercise, hot, dry climate, during fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, urinary tract infection, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

You lose water during respiration, through sweat, urine and bowel movements. You need to replenish this lost water through fluids, beverages, water and foods containing water.

You are said to be well hydrated if your urine is colourless or light yellow and quantity more than 1- 1.5 liters per day and you don’t feel thirsty.

The Source of Water 

Fruits, vegetables, milk, coffee and other beverages. But, certain beverages containing more sugar and caffeine can make you lose some water from your body.

Health Problems caused by Not Drinking Sufficient Water

  • Dehydration.
  • Constipation.
  • Bad breath.
  • Acidity and stomach ulcers.
  • Dry skin and premature aging.
  • Joint and muscle weakness.
  • Electrolyte imbalance.
  • Increased body heat.
  • Dark urine and burning micturition.
  • Easily fatigued.
  • Poor concentration.

Excess intake of water can dilute your blood leading to electrolyte imbalance like hyponatraemia.

Signs of Hyponatraemia:

  • Headache.
  • Nausea/vomiting.
  • Tiredness.
  • Weakness of muscles.
  • Seizures and coma.

In Ayurveda, there are various rules to drink water:

  • It is not advisable to drink too much of water just before or after meals, as it weakness your digestive power.
  • Drink water sip by sip with your meals.
  • If you are trying to lose weight, you can drink sufficient water half an hour before having meals.
  • It is said to be healthy to drink a small glass of lukewarm water or water kept in a copper vessel in the early morning.
  • It is ideal to drink lukewarm water instead of cold water.
  • Drink water when you feel thirsty.
  • According to Ayurveda, excess intake of water (Atyambu paana) is the cause of various diseases like weak digestion (mandagni), indigestion (aama), Runny nose (Pratishyaya), Diarrhoea (Atisara), obesity (sthoulya), Diabetes (prameha), etc.
