Ever wondered why ‘Yogi Bear’ eats so much honey and yet stays healthy? Scientists have discovered the reason for it! Grizzlies can fight off diabetes despite obesity. They gorge on food heavily and become obese in the autumn season. In winter, they go into hibernation. In this period, they show symptoms of type 2 diabetes. But unlike humans, their blood insulin levels do not change. Instead, their body cells do not respond to insulin hormone till hibernation ends.
Low levels of a protein called PTEN are responsible for this process. If humans have the same low level of PTEN, then they can remain sensitive to insulin despite obesity. This fact leaves plenty of room for scientists to explore a cure for diabetes in future!
