Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)? Blot Yourself with These Measures!

Remember your friend’s sweaty palms in high school? At that time you just wondered about it without knowing that it was hyperhidrosis, right? May be this post would help your friend.

Sweating is the body’s method to cool itself. Just like you would add a coolant to a machine once it’s heated up, the brain tells your body to sweat when it senses an increase in the body temperature.  So, sweating is quite natural and normal. It can occur more during emotional outbursts.

But, for the people who have hyperhidrosis, sweating can be quite unusual and embarrassing. Hyperhidrosis is the condition in which the body produces sweat excessively, much more than what a normal person would produce, even in a mild weather or if the person is at rest. This can be present either in just a specific part of the body or throughout the body. The most affected areas are armpits, face, feet and palms of the hand.

Why Does it Happen to Some?

The main cause of hyperhidrosis is overactive sweat glands, which can be caused by an infection, imbalance in natural hormones or any disease. It is also linked with conditions like obesity, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and menopause. It can also occur due to familial tendencies.

What Says Ayurveda on Hyperhidrosis?

Ayurveda says that our hair, follicles and skin pores consist of many sweat carrying channels, also known as the sweta vaha srotas, originating from the adipose tissue.  Whenever either kapha or pitta dosha gets aggravated, sweat starts pouring out of these srotas in excessive amounts. Excessive manifestation of pitta dosha leads to hyperhidrosis.

Kapha is responsible for increasing the water content and pitta for increasing the body heat. In hyperhidrosis, there is a vitiation of pitta dosha in the sweat carrying channels leading to more generation of body heat because of which Vyana vata tries to reduce the heat by removing water from the body through evaporation.

But, Don’t Get Drenched Anymore!

Taking medicines which have a cooling effect on the body can be quite helpful in this condition.

The Ayurvedic medicines which work effectively against this condition are:

  • Kanchanara guggulu

  • Arogya vardhini vati

  • Punarnavadi guggulu

  • Chandanasavam

  • Ushirasavam

  • Sariva churna

  • Pravala bhasma ,especially for palmar hyperhidrosis

  • If obesity is the cause then, Varandi kashayam, Medohar guggulu etc.

If you’re not a “medicine person”, still don’t get disappointed.  Here are some tips and lifestyle changes for you to try:

  • Apply coconut oil mixed with camphor or sandalwood paste on your body.
  • Take tomato juice regularly as it regulates the sweat glands.
  • Soak a sponge/clean cloth in vinegar and compress under arm pits. This process kills all the bacteria produced by sweat.
  • Always have a diet which pacifies the pitta dosha such as sweet fruits like melons, plums and peaches or bitter vegetables like asparagus, bitter gourd and spices like cumin, turmeric, coriander and fennel.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine. Make sure to get at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.
  • Don’t consume fermented, hot and spicy food.
  • Always wear cool colored clothing like white, blue/purple.
